Forgiveness is one of the greatest acts we can take for our spiritual growth as well as for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Usually when we think about forgiveness we bring to mind someone or something that we are holding a resentment towards.

However, the person we often forget to forgive is ourselves. Why and what we have to forgive is usually an act of omission or commission of ours – in other words something we have either done or not done.

Recently I have experienced some physical discomfort and began to think, “what brought this about?” I realized after some time that there was a decision I made which I felt was wrong so I was beating myself up about it. I know in time I will find the good in it but in the meantime this was wrecking havoc in my life physically.

I have had to forgive myself for this decision – what is done is done – and “this too is for good”. I also remembered something one of my spiritual mentors told me and that was to not beat myself up for choices I made that I judge to be wrong and to just move forward making better ones – AND TO FORGIVE MYSELF!

So if there is something you are punishing yourself for – forgive yourself and free yourself, you will find the results amazing!

Sometimes everything that’s happening in the world can seem overwhelming. If we spend too much time watching the news on TV or On-line we can get a misconstrued notion of what is really going on around us. However, there is always as many, if not more, wonderful events occurring as there are terrible incidents.

We should remember to see everything from a higher perspective. Rather than getting drawn into the negativity of some, we can be a light to help change our world for the better. You might be thinking, ”But I am only one person, what can I do?”

Never underestimate the power of positive thought in the world. Things can change and do change. Not just by people such as Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr, but by individuals such as you and I. Everyday there are stories, if one chooses to look for them, of people who are making a positive difference in this world. They may not be changing an entire nation but they are changing someone’s life and by doing so, they are creating a positive energy, which when multiplied by many, can do amazing things.

Never doubt the power you have in your hands – you can make a difference, you do make a difference!

How do you approach life – are you a giver or taker?

Before you make a list of people you know, and which class they fall into, why not ask the question of yourself?

I am not referring to whether you give money to church or charities or whether you volunteer. The answer lies in our motivation for giving, not where or how much we give. If we are motivated about what we can get, then we are takers. If we are motivated by a call of the heart to give, then we are givers.

Takers, no matter how much they get, never truly feel safe because they live from a consciousness of needing to have more than enough so they can feel secure. Givers give because they love to give, not because they will benefit from the giving.

Ask yourself, how do I look at life? Do I look to see what I can get all the time? Do I ask, “What’s in it for me?” Or, do I believe that life is a gift from Spirit and my job is to take that gift and, in gratitude, give back to life.

Wherever we are in life now, it is never too late to change from a taker to a giver. Being a giver has gifts that go far beyond those of the material world. It fills a person with love, peace, security and a contented and grateful heart.

Adversity – no matter how much we try to avoid it in our lives, it just seems to keep popping up. It could be of a financial nature, health, or, maybe a relationship. Whatever form it takes, sometimes, no matter how developed our consciousness is, things just happen. So the question is not whether it will happen but how do we deal with it when it does?

First, we can remember the phrase, “This, too, shall pass”. You may or may not like this statement but it is true. Everything in life changes, which means that at some point, no matter how much we plan, things can happen, which may not be as we would like. When it does, we can remember it will not be forever.

Second, we can practice the Serenity Prayer, (“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”) We can ask for guidance on whether there is anything we CAN change, and if not, to accept it for what it is at that moment. The more we resist things, the more we fight them, the more we deny their existence- the longer we have to deal with it.

There have been many times in my life that something I was struggling with disappeared almost as soon as I practiced acceptance and letting go of the need to control.

Thirdly, be aware that very often the things that cause us the most pain, are those that bring us the greatest gifts. This is not easy when you are in the middle of a crises, but it sure is a great way to get through those difficult times.

Which brings me to my last point – no matter how much you try to go around a challenge or avoid it, the best and quickest way to get to the other side is to just go through it! It may seem like the hardest way but in most cases it is the most effective way.

In the end, it is about how we face the challenges in our life that count, not whether or not we can avoid them.
