I am fortunate that I have two careers – both of which I love. I have the church ministry and a part time job at Sephora – a retailer of skin care, makeup, hair products and fragrance.
One of the reasons I love working at Sephora is the variety of people I have the opportunity to meet. Some are wonderful lessons in patience and tolerance and some are angels in the disguise of a human.
Last week I was fortunate to meet such an angel. Her name was Gertrude. Although she used a walker she was full of life, immaculately dressed and color coordinated, her make up was perfect, and her eyes were bright and clear. I was flabbergasted when her daughter told me she was having a birthday the following week and she was going to be 100!
I was amazed – not just because of how impeccable she looked, but by her life energy that came through. She was just not marking her days but was living and enjoying them as well. She was kind, thoughtful, considerate, and undemanding.
She was a perfect example of something my father always used to say – “Age is just a matter of the mind”.
But most importantly, she had enough zest and zeal that she touched the lives of everyone who met her and she really touched mine!
Thank you, Gertrude, for continuing to be God’s angel in human disguise. I will remember you for years to come and cherish the time I got to spend with you!
